I Spy…

I spy with my little eye…water, hydrogenated vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup to name a few.  These happen to be the first four ingredients in a very popular whipped topping.  Now I don’t know about you, but the fact that there is nothing in those first four ingredients that even resemble cream – that which the topping is supposed to be like – has me seriously disturbed.  This topping is sold as an option – a lower calorie, a lower in fat option –  for REAL cream.  Let me say that again – a fake option for the real thing.  Fake may be acceptable when buying fur, a purse, shoes etc., but not when it comes to our food.  Read your labels, do your research, know what you are putting into your body.  The only body you’ll ever have.  It isn’t until the fifth ingredient that you see skim milk listed.  Ahhh – finally something that actually has to do with the dairy family.  Keep in mind that ingredients are listed in order from the greatest amount to the least amount in the food. Aside from the water the other three things will have a negative impact on your health.  We have been duped into thinking that low cal, low-fat fake foods are a good option for our body.  Plain and simple – THEY ARE NOT!  These types of “foods” (and I use the word food loosely here) are unrecognizable to the human body.  Now take cream for instance – humm – what’s in cream?  It is not a trick question! Ask yourself some questions…Do I even know what hydrogenated vegetable oil is, or where it comes from?  I’ll give you a hint – it doesn’t come from veggies – they don’t squeeze broccoli, spinach, or any other vegetable for that matter to get vegetable oil.  I wouldn’t dream of pouring some vegetable oil and corn syrup right on my fresh fruit, or even my ice cream!  But if you use that topping that is basically what is happening – it just has been made to look enticing. 

Ever wonder why you aren’t losing that weight; have that recurring headache; feel bloated all the time; have constant joint pain; and the list goes on and on…  These are all very real symptoms that something in your food may be a problem.  We all know that these can be symptoms of other things, but food can play a big role in them too. Do some detective work.

So what do you spy when you look into your pantry and refrigerator?  Time to be a label aficionado.  Start off with small changes.  It may be a bit overwhelming at first so work at it at your own pace.  Try to swap out some of the prepackaged foods for foods that don’t even have an ingredient list – foods that your body recognizes as food. Your body will thank you!
